RECYCLING 101: In case you were wondering...
We have a new, official, plastic bag recycling bin. It is located near the library
entrance. The bin was donated by Moore Recycling Associates, Inc. If you are wondering
why we are recycling plastic bags at school, it is because plastic bags are NOT
recyclable in the City of Allen program. If they are placed in the blue recycling bin,
they are thrown in the trash.
Also, did you know that you do not have to remove labels from cans or bottles prior to
placing them in the recycle bin? However, plastic caps and lids from glass bottles, jars,
etc. should be removed and placed in the trash (don't worry about the ring around the
neck of the bottle).
Items accepted in the City of Allen recycling program are:
plastics #1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7
aluminum drink cans (no foil, pie plates or cookware)
steel food and drink cans, aerosol cans,
all colors of unbroken glass bottles and jars
dry, un-yellowed newspapers, phone books, catalogs, junk mail, paper bags,
corrugated cardboard boxes and chipboard will also be accepted
NO STYROFOAM
NO PLASTIC BAGS OF ANY KIND
Why are plastic bags not recyclable in the city program?
Plastic bags will jam the machinery at the MRF (material recovery facility). Think
conveyor belt with plastic bags wound around the cogs. It literally can cost hours of
downtime to pull the bags out of the machinery after it’s caught, which means money to the
recyclers. So, the MRF throws them in the trash.
Other interesting facts:
Many years back, we were asked to remove the labels on glass, and metal, and plastic
bottles. Now technology has advanced to the point that removal of labels is no longer
necessary. We do ask that the plastic caps be removed from the bottles (the caps cause
a contamination problem since the plastic resin is a different resin that that of the
bottle)… but don’t worry about the ring around the neck of the bottle… not enough %-wise
to create a contamination problem. Also please remove the lids from glass and dispose of
those as well as the plastic lids.
