Go Van Gogh

If you are looking for a way to volunteer at Green that will also be interesting and fun for you and your child, Go van Gogh is the way to go!

Go van Gogh is a wonderful art program for children, which is brought to our students by the Dallas Museum of Art. Every student in first through sixth grades is presented with the Go van Gogh program in their classroom. Our parent volunteers attend training at the museum and then return to the classroom to present works of art to the class and lead them in an art project.

The training sessions are at the DMA, located near downtown Dallas, on Fridays from 10:00 am until noon. New volunteers attend one session in early September which is an introduction to the program, and then attend another session which trains them on their particular project for the grade level they will be teaching. Volunteers get a private group Go van Gogh tour by museum personnel to see the works which they will present to the class.

After looking at the works the volunteers go back to the workshop and learn the art project. All of the projects are oriented to the elementary level so one does not need to be an “artist” to learn or to teach them. After the volunteer has completed the training, the Go van Gogh chairman coordinates the presentations with the classroom teachers. The presentations are usually scheduled within a month of the training.

All supplies for the project are provided and a Power Point slide show will be set up in the classroom ready for the volunteer to present the program. The presentation basically consists of showing the students pictures of the works of art shown at the museum training and letting the children tell you what they see in them (with the volunteer’s guidance). After about a 30 minute presentation, the volunteer shows the kids how to do the art project and they go to town!

The museum has separate trainings for those volunteers who have presented in the past. This is to save the volunteer from attending the same training year after year.

Volunteers spend a little more than an hour in the classroom presenting and teaching the art project. All together the amount of time spent volunteering for this is about 5-6 hours. Most people who have volunteered in the past return each year because they love it so much. The kids and teachers are also big fans!

If you are unable to attend any of the trainings at the DMA but are still interested in helping with Go van Gogh, we also need help with displaying the children’s artwork. This is something that can be done at a time that best fits your schedule and only takes an hour or two.

If you have any questions regarding the Go van Gogh program, please e-mail Diana Panko at dianapanko@tx.rr.com. Thank you!
